LWBI seeks partners to join our efforts in providing the needed improvements and equipments necessary for Regional Hospital of Zacapa to better service the needs of the community. 100% of monetary and in-kind donations received will help support our efforts in this area of Guatemala. Partners/contributors will be able to track the progress of this project on our web-site.
- Regional Hospital of Zacapa (RHZ)
- Located in the center of Zacapa, the RHZ is the only hospital servicing an entire community. After much discussion with the Director of the hospital, certain disease processes were identified as being of tremendous concern. As we toured the hospital the following became clear as areas of great need:
-
- • Physical structure – Which includes internal and external areas in need of repair.
- • Equipment for staff and patients – the need ranges from office equipment to medical supplies
• Need to support the rural patients – establishing a satellite connection with the regional hospital to which they are greatly receptive
- LWBI Wellness Center an extension of RHZ, Loma del Viento
- Currently not in existence, the LWBI Wellness Center of Loma del Viento will be an extension of the Regional Hospital of Zacapa. Our interview with the Director of RHZ and our first hand observations of the lack of medical support brings us to the conclusion that the only way to reach the population in the mountains in a way that is physically accessible by extending the reach of the hospital through the establishment of wellness clinics and immediate care centers. In the mountains of Zacapa, it is difficult in emergencies, to transport a patient to the hospital as expeditiously as possible due to lack of funding for transportation and necessary equipment. Often time the inability to reach the hospital in a timely manner has proven to be critical.
- While in Zacapa in February, our president learned of stories of people who suffered and even died due to the lack of proximal care.
- The young child in the Aldea whose body was covered with warts, when asked about recent doctor’s visit, mother stated that she was not able to afford. There was a lack of transportation for care.
- LWBI Community Center – Loma del Viento
- During our visit to Loma del Viento, we learned through observations and dialogue with the locals that there was a large number of children who were lacking in education. Unfortunately, due to lack of pay, the teachers in the area had not returned to school since the end of 2009. As a result, the children that we encountered, and there were many, moved about the streets unkempt and unattended by an adult.
In its current state, Loma del Viento is located in the mountains of Zacapa, Guatemala. There are two ways to access to this site: a river that runs close by or a partially paved road. Our contact and local Pastor in Loma del Viento, Mr.Villatoro has worked arduously to create a site that would be accessible and made available not only to local churches but also to the surrounding community. There is a small grocery store built and sustained by David, vegetation that he has planted and the initial floor plans for what is to become a multipurpose community center with boarding space.
