Alfonso Maya Joins LWBI!
We are excited to introduce Alfonso Maya. While in Mexico in the late 90’s, Dr. Smith met Alfonso and became familiar with his music. She fell in love with his song “La Nina de las Flores.” It is a song that poetically and profoundly addresses the growing concern for children who live on the streets. These children can be found anywhere you go. They spend their days on the streets selling anything from chewing gum to jewelry, trying to help their family. They are the children who may or may not have a bed to sleep on or a hot meal for the day or week. What happens to them? Who cares for them? Alfonso, through his music, brings cause to pause and reflect on the great need for action in communities around the world.
Alfonso Maya is one of the most talented singer-songwriters in México today. A true master of the "trova" genre of acoustic balladry and social protest song, Alfonso's music combines insightful, poetic lyrics with contagious melodies that have universal appeal. Alfonso casts a spell that leaves his audiences in equal parts enlightened and entertained. He has a classic voice for Latino ballad ..., a gift for creating haunting melodies, exceedingly creative with rhythms - combining elements of bossa nova, jazz, funk, rock, pop, folk, son jarocho, and other world rhythms to produce rhythmic creations that are unique and inimitable”
Alfonso was flown to participate in the 2006 Central Asian Music Festival, which was held that year in Astana, Kazakhstan. Alfonso won the award for best song arrangement. He has shared the stage with some of the most venerated artists in Latin American music, including Héctor Infanzón, Mexicanto and Fernando Delgadillo. His artistry was included on the compilation of best Trova songs of Mexico called "1, 2, 3 por la trova," produced by Fonarte Latino, and including the best Trova songs from Mexican artists. Alfonso released two studio discs: Giros y Giros(2001) and Tarot (2004). He is currently at work on his third disc.
LWBI is excited to have Alfonso join in support of our organization. There is a lot of work to be done and Dr. Smith views Alfonso’s experience in travel and his artistic ability of capturing the reality of the communities in which he has lived will bring greater awareness to others who share in a similar passion for service. We look forward to his future contribution to our growing organization. Learn more about Alfonso by visiting his page: www.myspace.com/alfmaya or www.alfonsomaya.net
